“When a patient comes for help, one should teach him yoga. Of course his sickness should be treated, but one should not stop there. One should take that person further into the spiritual domain of life.”
Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Yoga and Cancer Management

Yoga and Health (the management of cancer through yogic practices) is a Satyanandashram Hellas project inspired by Swami Sivamurti Saraswati, which was set up and run by members of the Satyananda Women’s Group of Thessaloniki. Some of the members in the Women’s Group had been through cancer themselves, and having applied specific yogic practices into their lives at the time, were able to successfully manage the symptoms of the cancer and cancer treatment.

The first Yoga and Health sessions, which primarily consisted of yoga nidra of the Satyananda system of yoga with special visualisations to assist in the cancer therapy treatment were set up in 2012. Since then, the class has grown and developed into an hour and half yoga session specializing in managing all the stages of breast cancer and its therapies (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy) by implementing specific Satyananda Yoga techniques. Since October 2013, these classes have been offered to members of Alma Zois Salonica (a non-profit national organization which assists those with breast cancer) the interest expressed by the women has been so great that a second class has been formed. Further collaboration with the association involves an open-day yoga class during “Raising Awareness of Cancer Week” as well as participation in Alma Zois conferences.

Over 50 women, in total, have attended a Yoga and Health class during this seven-year period. Two classes are currently running on Wednesdays with an average of ten women in each class. The advanced class is attended by those who have practiced yoga before, and have completely finished their cancer treatment, while the second class caters for total beginners and women who are still undergoing therapy.
A special syllabus has been designed for that purpose which also guides and inspires the yoga instructors along every step of the way.

Management of Cancer Conference: 14th- 15th November, 2020

This conference is a forerunner for a series of seminars on the yogic management of cancer which are planned to take place in the near future. The conference, as well as the seminars that will ensue, examine how yogic practices work to aid those with cancer helping them reconnect with themselves, creating a supportive community in which they feel part of, assisting them through their cancer therapy, as well as aftercare practices to regain and sustain good health.

The yoga and cancer management project requires both monetary and voluntary support in order for it to reach out to people who are going through cancer, or who have been through it. Donations are most appreciated.
