To one of the many wise men in Greece was put the same question as in the Upanishads, “What after all, is reality?” He gave just one reply, “Know Thyself.” History knows him by the name of Socrates. This is basically the subject matter of yoga, and when you know the Self, you know the mind, you know the body, you know the universe

10 year vision of SATYANANDA YOGA® in Greece (2019 – 2029) Swami Sivamurti Sawaswati

Swami Sivamurti Saraswati has continued for the last 40 years to build and develop the vision of her guru Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati, and afterwards the vision of Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati, to spread the teachings of yoga all over Greece and abroad. Lives have been transformed and many have been inspired.

The following are some of Swami Sivamurti’s aims in progress and the goals that have been set for the next decade for SATYANANDA YOGA® in Greece

A Federation of Yoga

The federation was formed to unite yoga centers of the Satyananda system of yoga and to help solidify the presence of Satyananda yoga in society.
Swami Sivamurti Saraswati

The establishment of a Federation of Yoga, which was recently formed in 2019, aims to unite all the centers teaching the Satyananda System of Yoga, and to represent the instructors of the Satyananda System of Yoga as an official body.

Friends of Satyananda Yoga

An association named  “The Friends of  Satyananda Yoga” was established in 2019 with the aim of unifying all people who have benefited from their contact with the Satyananda system of Yoga. Sannyasins, and devotees, new and old who have been benefited and trained in this system over the years, have been invited to join the Friends of Satyananda Yoga as well as new friends who have just come into contact with the Satyananda tradition and would like to be part of this sangha.

A Sannyasa Body

There are many reasons for taking initiation into sannyasa. One of the most compelling reasons is the soul’s longing to understand the deeper meaning of life. As Sri Swamiji said, ‘Sannyasa is a way of life, adopted by a few people in every age since time immemorial, as a means to explore, to know and to awaken the depths of their own being.
Swami Sivamurti Saraswati

The creation of a Sannyasa Body for Karma and Jignasu sannyasins aims to support and guide those who have taken initiation in the Satyananda tradition, and enable them to deepen their commitment to sannyasa, train them in the basic principles of sannyasa, and encourage them to go for further training to Sannyasa Peeth, Munger, India.

Expansion of ashram and the creation of a gurukul system – long term project

In ancient Greece, many ashrams and mystery schools existed, where the ancient Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Epictetus,  Pythagoras etc. imparted their knowledge. The land on which the residential ashram lies has a long history of spiritual activity. It is said to have once been a sanctuary where the esoteric Dionysian mysteries were taught and that the town of Paiania was the birthplace of the philosopher Socrates and the renowned orator Demosthenes.
Swami Sivamurti Saraswati

The rapid spread of yoga in Greece and Europe gave birth to the need to create an ashram in the early 1980s, which was the mandate Sri Swamiji gave to Swami Sivamurti. The current land (1 acre in size) has accommodated the needs of the ashram for about four decades. However, the increase in the number of visitors has brought about a new quest for land.

As such, the extension of the ashram is a priority, and the purchase of new land will accommodate both Greek and foreign aspirants in the surrounding area near the ashram, so that these new areas, also can become part of the ashram community and one residing there can participate in the daily ashram activities.

This extension of land also envisages housing including a special area for Yogic training for children and teenagers so that they can learn the basic precepts of a ‘yogic lifestyle’ from an early age and be inspired to take an active role in teaching other children the yogic practices themselves.

The rebirth of the gurukul system is aimed at conveying to children the values and principles of yoga so that they can express the ideals of traditional yoga while at the same time be trained in lifestyle skills. This project will also give sannyasin teachers and instructors the opportunity to come along with their families and contribute to the creation and development of a new way of educating children.

The establishment of a multi-purpose center in Athens and Thessaloniki

The need has arisen to create in Athens and Thessaloniki a multi-purpose center, where  people of all ages will have the opportunity to experience yoga through a variety of collective activities, such as yoga classes, satsangs, kirtan and chanting, movie screenings, lectures as well as cooking classes in the kitchen facilities. Here people will be able to live and implement yoga in their everyday life through three main areas: education, music and a sattwic diet.

The creation of a multi-purpose space will inspire and foster the yogic culture to flourish, and provide people with the opportunity to express their positivity, creativity and dynamism, which is so imperative in this day and age.
Swami Sivamurti Saraswati

Satyananda Yoga Events and Festivals

The primary aspiration of the mandate given to me by Sri Swamiji, is to communicate and spread the richness of Satyananda Yoga’s tradition in Greece.
Swami Sivamurti Saraswati

Over the next decade, the organization of festivals, seminars, public lectures, conferences, book presentations and music events, will be scheduled in the major cities around Greece.

One of our priorities will be to create events that attract both parents and children, as well as organise conferences and seminars where people from the fields of science, education and the arts can meet with yoga teachers and instructors to exchange views and be exposed to the benefits of yoga.

Research into connecting the principles and teachings of Yoga to Ancient Greek philosophy.

Sri Swami Satyananda very often referred to the relation between the yogic philosophy and the ancient Greece culture as well as the connection of both these civilisations from ancient times. His respect towards the Greek philosophy, principles and values was one of the reasons he chose to establish the ashram in Greece. The teachings of yoga and the teachings of Pythagoras, Socrates, Epictetus, Diogenes, and others, closely relate to the one theme, “Know Thyself”.
Swami Sivamurti Saraswati

The aim over the next decade is to publish, articles and books that explore the similarities between the ancient Greek tradition and the Yogic tradition.

It is important to understand that European culture emerged from the ancient Greek culture, which in turn was influenced by older civilisations. We trace back in time the same teachings from the Pythagoreans who taught “Know thyself and you will know the universe and the gods,” to Plato who espoused that “The essence of knowledge is self-knowledge” as did his student Aristotle, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” A few hundred years prior to this, Thales, one of the seven sages of ancient Athens said: The most difficult thing in life is to know the Self.

Yet long before the Greek philosophers, the underlying teachings in the Upanishads (800 BC) instructed that knowing the Self was the ultimate goal of life. “Know Thyself and be free”. In the Katha Upanishad we read, “The Self lies beyond the senses and can only be understood by him who knows it is.”

The same teachings Buddha gave his disciples, but even further back in time, before ancient Egyptian civilisation (approximately 3150 BC), the teachings existed ,“Man, know thyself, and thou shalt know the gods.”

This experience comes when one transcends the mind and knows oneself to be rooted in the Self not the Mind. This Self can be experienced, but it cannot be understood by the mind. It is a transcendental experience. The greatest obstacle to the experience of the Self is our identification with the mind. We need to free ourselves from the mind, to master the mind. When the mind becomes quiet, then you can see the Self.

It is yoga that gives one the practical techniques which enable one to know, experience and realize the Self, and along the way gain better physical health, peace of mind, inner joy and tap into the enormous potential and creativity within. Today, more than ever, yoga plays a major role in influencing not only European culture, but the world at large.

Technology and social media

A priority for Satyananda Yoga over the coming years is the renewal and upgrading of Satyanandashram’s website in terms of its visual content, texts and functionality. This project has started early 2020 with the uploading of our new Web site.

Our goal is to ensure that our digital presence reflects the beauty and philosophy of our tradition and provides direct and accurate information to the public connecting visitors with the positivity, optimism and joy that the Satyananda Yoga tradition inspires.

Along with the above projects, there are others which are running, or are in the process of being set up which you can find more details of on this site: Give kids yoga, Satyananda Math-AMBA, Teacher’s Sangha, Satyananda Women’s Groups  and Publications.
