Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Entrusted by Swami Sivananda with the mission of spreading yoga from door to door and from shore to shore, Swami Satyananda became the foremost inspirer of yoga in the 20th century. A modern day sage and visionary, he established yoga as part of mainstream society, making the ancient systems of Tantra and yoga accessible to people of all faiths and nationalities for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual evolution. In 1963 Swami Satyananda founded the Bihar School of Yoga (BSY). From its inception Swami Satyananda’s teaching rapidly spread throughout the world, and yoga became a household word. At the peak of his accomplishment, Swami Satyananda renounced all that he had created, went on a pilgrimage around India and eventually settled in Rikhia (a remote, deprived area of India), where with the sankalpa of peace, abundance and well-being for all, performed the highest spiritual sadhana, known as panchagni. In Rikhia, he received the divine mandate “Take care of your neighbours as I have taken care of you” and began to construct homes for the homeless and assist the less privileged in every way in obtaining a sustainable livelihood. Swami Satyananda lived as a Paramahamsa Sannyasin until 5 December 2009, when he entered into mahasamadhi (the highest state of consciousness).

Yoga will emerge as a mighty world power; it is the need of today and the culture of tomorrow and will change the course of world events.
